Brief History of Ballina RSL Billiards & Snooker Club Over 50 Years In the late 1940's, a group of ex-servicemen came together in a small hall on Moon Street, Ballina, in search of camaraderie and recreational activities. They were fortunate to have access to a Billiards/Snooker table, which quickly became the focal point for socializing and relaxation. As their numbers grew, the Ballina RSL Club was established, leading to a decision to seek larger premises. Eventually, the current location of the club where it stands today stands was chosen and officially opened in the 1960s.
As the RSL membership base expanded, the foresight and interest of RSL Club Management led to the provision of more Billiards/Snooker tables, tradition that continues to this day. In the 1970s, those who enjoyed playing Billiards & Snooker decided to formalize their involvement by creating an official Billiards & Snooker Club. This initiative resulted in the development of a program featuring weekly and annual tournaments, made possible through the dedication and enthusiasm of its members and committees.
The Annual Southern Cross Classic has emerged as a premier event, attracting 48 players each June for the past 30-plus years from various parts of Australia and, occasionally, overseas. Remarkably, the Club’s commitment to inclusivity is evident in its welcoming approach to individuals of all genders, ages and backgrounds. This fosters a friendly environment that promotes a sense of community among players of all skill levels. Scratch and handicapped competitions ensure equal opportunities for everyone, thereby promoting fair play and camaraderie.
